Ellery Klein
Ellery Klein's writing career began in high school, at the acclaimed School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she double-majored in violin and creative writing. Notebooks full of bad poetry, short stories and plays convinced her that a future in fiction writing was not in her future, and music took center stage for the next fifteen years. However, in 2007, the birth of her first child spelled the end for her life on the road. She put fingers to keyboard and published "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing the Fiddle" in October 2008--and discovered a passion for writing nonfiction material.
Ellery Klein worked as a professional touring Irish fiddler for 15 years, most notably as the fiddler for Irish band Gaelic Storm from 2003-2007. She was fiddler for the bands Whisky Before Breakfast and most recently, Long Time Courting. Together with Ryan Lacey of Gaelic Storm, she produces music for Irish step dancers under the rum & raisin records label.
Ellery has also taught fiddle workshops internationally, been a Music Together children's music instructor, assistant-managed at Vermont's Lake Champlain Chocolates factory store, taught English in Japan, sold fruits and veggies at an farmer's market, measured microscopic parts on medical equipment for quality control, waitressed in New York City and worked for two environmental companies. She holds a B.S. in Geology from the University of Vermont, as well as an M.A. in traditional Irish music from the University of Limerick.
Currently, Ellery lives with her husband, who is a radio journalist, and their two young children in Jerusalem, Israel. She has also lived in Boston, Massachusetts; New York City; Burlington, Vermont; Cincinnati, Ohio; Cork and Limerick, Ireland; and Osaka, Japan.
She draws from her diverse experiences and interests to write about fiddle, Irish music, food, travel, children, and environmental issues for Suite 101.
